Best Pilates Exercises for Improving Posture

Let’s be real—“stand up straight” is great advice… until you’re 3 hours into emails, 2 lattes deep, and somehow shaped like a croissant.
If you’re in Fort Myers and looking for a real (and actually doable) solution to your posture problems, Pilates might just be your new best friend.
At Barre Roots, we see it all the time—clients walk in saying things like:
“My neck is always tight”
“I feel like I’m shrinking??”
“My posture’s gotten worse since working from home”
And you know what? You’re not broken. You’re just human. And Pilates can help.
Why Pilates for Posture?
Pilates strengthens the deep core muscles that support your spine—your abs, yes, but also your glutes, shoulders, and those hard-to-reach little stabilizers. Think of it like scaffolding for your skeleton.
Over time, you’ll naturally sit, stand, and move with more alignment (without having to constantly think about it).
More balance. Less tension. Fewer “omg why does my back feel like that?” moments.
Our Top 5 Pilates Moves for Better Posture
These are some of our go-to exercises in class (and yes, we modify for everyone). Come by the studio in Fort Myers and we’ll walk you through them in person!
1. Wall Angels
Like snow angels, but against a wall. This helps open tight shoulders and retrain your upper back to stay lifted.
2. Pelvic Tilts
Lying on your back, these teach you to connect your breath to your spine. We do these a lot in class—and people are always surprised how powerful they feel once they click.
3. Bird-Dog
We sneak this into almost every class (shhh). It strengthens your whole posterior chain—core, glutes, and upper back—without stressing your joints.
4. Bridge Lifts
These fire up your glutes and help stabilize your pelvis, which is a huge part of standing tall.
5. Chest Openers with Weights or Bands
Perfect for counteracting all that hunching over your desk/kids/steering wheel. We love these in our barre-Pilates hybrid classes.
Real Talk: It’s Not Just About Looks
Sure, standing taller makes you look more confident (and you’ll get more height in group photos, lol).
But good posture also helps with:
Fewer headaches
Less lower back pain
Better energy (yes, really!)
Deeper, easier breathing
And that’s not just us saying it. One of our regulars recently said:
“I didn’t even realize how hunched I was until I caught myself standing taller at the grocery store. I didn’t even think about it—it just happened.”
