Core Strength Matters More Than You Think

When people hear “core strength,” they usually think of abs.

Which, sure. We love a strong middle. But your core is doing way more than just trying to survive a plank while we lovingly yell “you can do anything for 45 minutes.”

Your core helps support your posture, balance, stability, and the everyday stuff you probably don’t even think about — picking up groceries, getting out of the car, carrying your kid, reaching for something on a high shelf, or simply sitting at your desk without slowly turning into a shrimp.

That’s one of the reasons we love Mat Pilates so much.

In class, we focus on those deep core muscles that help your whole body move better. Not in a scary, intense, “you must be advanced to be here” kind of way. More like: small movements, controlled breathing, lots of shaking, and suddenly you realize, “Wait… why do I feel taller?”

And the best part? You don’t have to be “good” at Pilates to get the benefits. You just have to show up and let your body learn.

Over time, that deep core work starts showing up outside the studio. You feel steadier. You stand a little taller. Your balance improves. You move through your day with more confidence because your body feels more supported from the inside out.

One Barre Roots client said, “I was able to engage muscles I have never focused on before.” And honestly? That’s the magic. Sometimes strength isn’t about doing the biggest movement in the room. Sometimes it’s about finally waking up the muscles that have been quietly minding their business for years.

So yes, Mat Pilates will work your core.

But it’ll also help you feel stronger in the tiny, everyday moments that make a big difference.
