Pilates Class Tips from a Studio Owner in Fort Myers, FL
If you're prepping for your first Pilates class and staring blankly at your closet, you're not alone.
One of the most common questions new clients ask, after “Where do I park?”, is what to wear. And honestly? It matters more than you might think. The right outfit can help you move more comfortably, feel more confident, and stay focused on what you came for (spoiler: not adjusting your shirt every five minutes).
Here’s what to know before you roll out your mat:
1. Wear Something You Can Move In
Think: clothes that stretch with you, not against you.
Our Pilates-style classes involve lots of full range of motion, bending, twisting, stretching, and strengthening. You’ll want to wear something that moves with your body and won’t get in the way. Leggings and a supportive sports bra or tank are always a solid choice.
Loose or super-baggy clothing might seem comfy at first, but it can actually make it harder to see your form—both for you and for your instructor. We want to help you get the most out of your workout, and that starts with being able to see how your body is moving.
2. Not Sure Where to Start? Try a Set
My personal go-to is a sports bra and leggings set. I like feeling put-together and supported, and it saves me from digging through drawers for a matching top.
If you’re looking for an affordable option, I love the brand Aoxjox on Amazon. Their sets are super comfy, flattering, and hold up well through lots of movement.
3. We’ve Got You Covered—Literally
We recently started carrying a few leggings and biker shorts in-studio, in case you want to shop local. No pressure to buy, but it's nice to have a backup if you forget your favorite pair.
And just so you know, you don’t need fancy gear or name-brand outfits to get started. If you can move in it, you’re probably good to go.
4. A Note on Socks
Some studios require grippy socks, and while we don’t make it mandatory, we do recommend it. Grip socks help you stay stable during standing movements and core work, especially if you're on a slick floor or using props.
If you're not sure, bring a pair just in case. Worst case, you kick 'em off.
5. Final Tip: Wear What Makes You Feel Good
Yes, technical fit matters. But so does how you feel walking into the studio. If there’s an outfit that makes you feel confident, strong, or just a little more like the version of you who does Pilates? Wear that.
The goal isn’t to “look the part”, it’s to feel ready to move.
TL;DR — Your Pilates Outfit Checklist:
✔️ Stretchy, fitted clothes (leggings, bike shorts, sports bra, or tank)
✔️ Avoid anything too loose or oversized
✔️ Grip socks (optional, but helpful)
✔️ Confidence (mandatory 😄)
